I don't even want to admit what my husband and I owe in student debt. My loans are even MORE embarrassing, considering I dropped out of school. I was smart in community college, and paid cash for classes as I could afford them...but then when I went for my Bachelor's degree, I took out loans, and dropped out in my junior year. Y'all, I owe money on a degree I don't even HAVE!
With student loans being such a huge burden on young adults in America, what would you be willing to do to see that debt be wiped clean?
There's a new game show coming to TruTV tonight called "Paid Off" where 20- and 30-somethings compete in a question-and-answer type show...and the prize is getting your student debt paid off!
Host Michael Torpey says, quote, "[It's] an absurd show to match an absurd crisis. A game show feels really apt because this is the state of things right now.
"I know what we're doing is a little ridiculous, but in a way the show matched my family's story. The only way we could pay off student loans was because I booked an underwear ad? That's insane."
And at the end of every episode he says, quote, "Call your representatives right now, and tell them you need a better solution than this game show."
On a personal note, I hope young adults in America start to realize that having a 4 year degree from a traditional college isn't always the best way to get an education. I hope to see a rise in trade-school enrollment, where you can graduate sooner and with less debt, and get into careers that pay well and are in high demand. I am not one to live in regret, but if I could do anything differently, it would be go to back in time and not take out student loans. I'm 35 and still paying off two-thirds of a degree!
Will you watch the show?? Looks interesting to me! Here's a clip!
