'Unconditional Surrender’ Statue Moving to New Home on Beneva Road?

'Unconditional Surrender’ Statue Moving to New Home on Beneva Road?

That is what was discussed yesterday and approved when the "Sarasota Public Arts Committee" unanimously recommended permanently removing the “Unconditional Surrender” sculpture from the Sarasota bayfront and it's current location.

It would be relocated, about four miles away... to the Sarasota Sahib Shriners’ location, at 600 N. Beneva Road.

The Shriners have agreed to pay to move, maintain and keep the 26-foot-tall statue. If the City Commission agrees in September, to it's new location.

Part of the reason for the move, is because of construction that will begin, in the next few months nearby.

The “Unconditional Surrender” statue needs to be moved by October 2020 to make room for the construction of a roundabout at Gulfstream Avenue and U.S. 41.

Work on this new Gulfstream roundabout is expected to begin in the spring of 2021 and take about a year to complete. During the construction, temporary lanes will be created to allow for movement of traffic through the intersection. Those lanes, and the surrounding work zones, will overlap the land occupied by the “Unconditional Surrender” statue.
