Sarasota Police Issue Warning Over Phone Scams

The Sarasota Police Department is warning everyone to beware of a couple of phone scams involving someone claiming to represent the agency.

A caller makes various claims and is said to be a member of the Sarasota Police Department soliciting donations or claiming there is an unpaid red-light camera ticket.

Sarasota Police say..."Some callers also claim that they have a warrant for the person who answered the phone unless they make payment over the phone." This type of scam typically uses a voice over internet protocol ... number making it possible for the caller to call someone within a specified area code through the Internet as if it were a local call," according to the agency. "Typically, these types of calls originate outside the United States."

Police officials said such calls are difficult for law enforcement to investigate.

"The Sarasota Police Department wants to remind citizens that officers or civilians from SPD will never solicit funds over the phone or request personal financial information," the agency cautioned. "Citizens are reminded to not share any personal or financial information with these types of callers."

To report a suspicious call, call the Sarasota Police Department at 941-263-6773.
