Food banks scramble to meet unprecedented need as Thanksgiving nears.

The pandemic is putting extra pressure on food banks across Florida as Thanksgiving approaches.

"The demand for food is up incredibly because of the numbers of people that are affected this year by the economic turndown that is associated with the epidemic," Greg Higgerson with Second Harvest Food Banks of Central Florida said. "So many more people furloughed or laid off permanently."

Higgerson says cash donations are always welcome. So are donations out of your own pantry but the food will have to be quarantined before it's distributed.

"Because if it comes off somebody's home shelves we really don't know what the history of those items are and so we need to hold them before we can distribute them but the dollars can provide an awful lot of food and quickly and it's probably the easiest way for people to give as well."

You can donate at feedhopenow.org. Higgerson says about 40-percent of the people need food assistance are in this situation for the first time in their lives.
