Pensacola Shelter Sends Animals to Pinellas County for Adoption

LARGO -- When Hurricane Sally hit Pensacola earlier this week, a local animal shelter had dozens of dogs and cats ready for adoption. But shelter staff soon realized that people dealing with flooding and wind damage were mostly in no position to take in new pets.

So they reached out to their counterparts in the region. The Louisiana SPCA offered to help transport 30 dogs and 15 cats out of Pensacola. The SPCA Tampa Bay shelter in Pinellas County sent a vehicle to pick them up in Tallahassee Friday, and bring them down to the shelter in Largo.

SPCA Tampa Bay CEO Martha Boden says the animals will get checked out by a veterinarian. They'll post available pets on their website as they are cleared by veterinarians.
