Grade school students grow food for the needy

About 120 students at West Side Elementary School in Demopolis, Alabama, are members of a garden club. They are learning to grow and harvest crops, which is a great educational opportunity for them.

But the students are getting an extra bonus from the club -- because it’s allowing them to serve the community, as all of the food grown in the garden goes to those in need.

The teachers have found that the students are using math skills and learning to work together as a team out in the fresh air.

The unique experience of working in the dirt -- along with the sense of giving -- are sure to make this project something the kids will remember forever.
