Two middle school teachers in Maple Grove, Minnesota, noticed that there was a lack of volunteering opportunities for teenagers in the area, so they stepped up and got a bunch of their students helping those in need in the community.
The teachers, Betsy Fine and Sarah Bailey, created a special gifted-and-talented summer school class that involved the students working at a social services agency, sorting donations, stocking shelves and doing some cleaning.
The kids also made cards for servicemen and servicewomen and sent care packages filled with candy, nuts, beef jerky and toothbrushes.
The students, who all wore shirts with the message, "I choose kindness," definitely had a summer to remember. And, they’re already making plans to continue their charity work with new projects during the upcoming school year.
