Not many people can say they've had a date declared in their honor, but if you live to be 114 like Alelia Murphy, you might get your chance.
The Harlem, New York, woman is the oldest person in America and she recently had a 114th birthday party. Her family serenaded her with Stevie Wonder's classic take on "Happy Birthday" and New York State Senator Brian Benjamin proclaimed July 6th "Alelia Murphy Day" in Harlem.
Murphy was born in 1905 in North Carolina and moved to New York City in 1926. When asked about the secret to her longevity, Murphy's granddaughter answered, "She says God, he's the one who let her stay here so long.” Murphy also doesn't drink and she maintains an active lifestyle.
