Australian Open Player Forced to Quit Match From Bushfire-Induced Coughing

Tennis player Dalila Jakupovic was forced to retire in the second set of her qualifying match on the first day of the 2020 Australian Open in Melbourne due to a coughing fit brought on by brushfire smoke and poor air quality. After reporting chest pain during her warmups, Jakupovic told reporters, "The points were getting bigger and I couldn't breathe out on the court. I couldn't stand up." UPI reports that tournament officials suspended play Tuesday morning due to poor air quality, but conditions are expected to improve later in the week.
